What is salvation?

In Christianity, salvation is God’s rescue of humanity from sin and its consequences through Jesus Christ. What is salvation? The Bible teaches that salvation is a gift from God. We cannot earn it by being good enough or doing enough good things. We receive salvation through faith in Jesus Christ.

Jesus came into the world, died on the cross for our sins, and rose from the dead. Through Him, we can receive forgiveness, be reconciled to God, and have the promise of eternal life.

Why Do We Need Salvation?

The Bible teaches that everyone has sinned.

Romans 3:23 says that all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.

That includes every one of us.

We may compare ourselves to other people and think, I’m a pretty good person. But salvation isn’t based on whether we are better or worse than someone else.

Our relationship is with a holy God.

Romans 6:23 explains both the problem and God’s answer: sin leads to death, but God’s gift is eternal life through Jesus Christ.

Notice the word gift. The gift of salvation.

Salvation isn’t something we purchase, achieve, or deserve.

God offers it to us through Jesus.

What Does Salvation Mean?

The word salvation means rescue or deliverance.

From a Christian perspective, salvation means being saved from sin and reconciled to God through Jesus Christ.

Sin separates us from God. Scripture teaches that all of us have sinned and fall short of God’s glory (Romans 3:23). None of us can make ourselves perfect enough to overcome that separation.

But God did something for us that we could never do for ourselves.

He sent Jesus.

John 3:16 tells us that God loved the world so much that He gave His only Son so that whoever believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.

That is the heart of salvation.

It is not about becoming religious.

It is not about pretending that you have everything together.

It is about recognizing that you need a Savior and putting your faith in Jesus Christ.

Is Jesus the Only Way to Salvation?

The Bible’s answer is yes.

Jesus said:

“I am the way and the truth and the life.” — John 14:6

Acts 4:12 also teaches that salvation is found in no one else.

“Salvation is found in no-one else, for there is no other name under Heaven given to men by which we must be saved.”

Christian salvation rests entirely on who Jesus is and what He accomplished through His death and resurrection.

Jesus Christ, the Son of God, willingly died on the cross for our sins. He was buried and rose again.

Because of Jesus, forgiveness and reconciliation with God are available to us.

How Do I Get Saved?

This is one of the most important questions anyone can ask.

The Bible gives us a remarkably clear answer.

Romans 10:9 teaches that if you confess that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved.

Salvation involves:

1. Recognizing that you are a sinner and need God’s forgiveness.
2. Believing that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
3. Believing that Jesus died for your sins and rose from the dead.
4. Turning to God and placing your faith in Jesus Christ.
5. Confessing Jesus as Lord and accepting Him as your Savior.

You don’t have to make yourself perfect before coming to Jesus.

Can Anyone Be Saved?

Yes.

The invitation of the Gospel is not reserved for a particular race, nationality, social class, background, or type of person.

Romans 10:13 gives one of the simplest and most beautiful promises in Scripture:

“Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.”

EVERYONE.

Your past does not put you beyond God’s ability to forgive.

You don’t have to clean up your entire life first and then come to Jesus. You come to Jesus because you need Him.

Ephesians 2:8–9 explains that we are saved by God’s grace through faith. Salvation is God’s gift, not something we earn through our own works.

Is Believing in Jesus More Than Saying the Words?

Yes.

Getting saved and accepting Christ as your Savior isn’t simply repeating the words, “I believe in Jesus.”

Romans 10 speaks about believing in your heart and confessing with your mouth.

God knows your heart.

Saving faith means genuinely placing your trust in Jesus Christ—believing who He is, trusting what He did for you, turning toward Him, and receiving Him as Lord and Savior.

A prayer does not save you because you said exactly the right words.

Jesus saves.

Prayer is simply a way of talking to God and expressing the faith, repentance, and belief that are in your heart.

What Happens When You Accept Jesus Christ?

When you genuinely put your faith in Jesus Christ, the Bible teaches that you receive forgiveness and eternal life and are brought into a relationship with God.

Second Corinthians 5:17 describes the person who is in Christ as a new creation.

That doesn’t mean you suddenly become perfect.

The Christian life is a journey of learning, growing, trusting God, turning away from sin, and becoming more like Christ.

Christian salvation is the beginning of a new life with Jesus.

How Do I Get Saved and Accept Jesus as My Savior?

You can turn to Jesus right now.

You don’t need to be inside a church.

You don’t need a pastor standing beside you.

You don’t need special words.

Talk to God honestly.

Acknowledge your sin and your need for forgiveness. Tell Him that you believe Jesus Christ is His Son, that Jesus died for your sins, and that God raised Him from the dead. Ask for forgiveness and place your faith in Jesus as your Lord and Savior.

Christian Salvation Is the Beginning, Not the End

Accepting Jesus isn’t the end of your spiritual journey.

It’s the beginning.

Jesus prayed in John 17:3 about eternal life being found in knowing the true God and Jesus Christ whom He sent.

God wants you to know Him.

After accepting Christ, begin reading the Bible and talking to God through prayer. Find a Bible-believing church where you can learn Scripture and have fellowship with other Christians.

Ask questions.

Learn who Jesus is.

Learn what He taught.

And allow God to change your heart and your life.

You don’t need to understand everything about Christianity before beginning.

Start with Jesus.

What Should I Do After I’m Saved?

If you have accepted Jesus Christ as your Savior, here are some important next steps:

• Pray. Talk to God regularly and honestly.
• Read the Bible. A wonderful place to begin is the Gospel of John. You can read Scripture online or use a free Bible app such as YouVersion.
• Find a Bible-believing church. Christian fellowship and biblical teaching are important parts of spiritual growth.
• Learn about Jesus. The more you understand who Jesus is, the more you will understand the foundation of your faith.
• Tell someone. Share your decision with another Christian who can encourage you.
• Share the Gospel. Don’t keep the good news to yourself.

Romans 10 asks an important question: How can people believe in the One they have never heard about?

Someone shared the Gospel with us.

Now we have the opportunity to share it with someone else.
