Blessed In The Beatitudes
What does being blessed in the Beatitudes mean? If you want to live for God you must be ready to say and do what seems strange to the world. You must be willing to give when others take, to love when others hate, to help when others abuse. By giving up your own rights in order to serve others, you will one day receive everything God has in store for you. The Beatitudes is basically standards of conduct, a code of ethics for all followers of Christ.
Jesus gives the Beatitudes to his disciples also knowing the crowds were listening. This is for all followers of Christ.
The Beatitudes in NIV of Matthew & Luke
Matthew 5:3-12
Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
Blessed are the merciful,
for they will be shown mercy.
Blessed are the pure in heart,
for they will see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called sons of God.
Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
Luke 6:20-26
Blessed are you who are poor,
for yours is the kingdom of God.
Blessed are you who hunger now,
for you will be satisfied.
Blessed are you who weep now,
for you will laugh.
Blessed are you when men hate you,
when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil,
because of the Son of Man.
Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven.
For that is how their fathers treated the prophets.
But woe to you who are rich,
for you have already received your comfort.
Woe to you who are well fed now,
for you will go hungry
Woe to you who laugh now,
for you will mourn and weep.
Woe to you when al men speak well of you,
for that is how their fathers treated the false prophets.
The Beatitudes in the Jewish Bible of Matthew & Luke
Matthew 5:3-12
How blessed are the poor in spirit!
for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
How blessed are those who mourn!
for they will be comforted.
How blessed are the meek!
for they will inherit the Land!
How blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness!
for they will be filled.
How blessed are those who show mercy!
for they will be shown mercy.
How blessed are the pure in heart!
for they will see God.
How blessed are those who make peace!
for they will be called sons of God.
How blessed are those who are persecuted because they pursue righteousness!
for the Kingdom of Heaven is theirs.
How blessed you are when people insult you and persecute you and tell all kinds of vicious lies about you because you follow me! Rejoice, be glad, because your reward in heaven is great–they persecuted the prophets before you in the same way.
Luke 6:20-26
How blessed are you poor!
for the Kingdom of God is yours
How blessed are you who are hungry!
for you will be filled.
How blessed are you who are crying now!
for you will laugh.
How blessed you are whenever people hate you and ostracize you and insult you and denounce you as a criminal on account of the Son of Man. Be glad when that happens; yes, dance for joy! because in heaven your reward is great. For that is just how their fathers treated the prophets.
But woe to you who are rich,
for you have already had all the comfort you will get!
Woe to you who are full now,
for you will go hungry!
Woe to you who are laughing now,
for you will mourn and cry!
Woe to you when people speak well of you, for that is just how their fathers treated the false prophets!
