For some of us, our daily lives consist of working to pay bills, feeding our family, watching tv, and spending useless time on social media and phone games. Two of my biggest weaknesses are working and phone games. Working is self explanatory and the games just help me wind down for the day. What if I freed up the time I spend on the phone to serve God? That’s exactly what I’m going to do. Today, I deleted all of my games and asked God to show me how to serve. It may sound a little petty, but these games take up a lot of time that I could be doing something good for someone else and doing what God is asking me to do.
Jesus said in John 12:26 “Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant also will be. My Father will honor the one who serves me.”
What can you or I actually do to serve? Here are some simple ways to serve God:
- Donate food to a food pantry
- Donate gently used items such as toys and clothes to a boys or girls home
- Help serve food at your local church
- Volunteer at a nursing home (or retirement/assisted living community)
- If you’re a musician, offer to play music at a nursing home
- Create and handout homeless care packages (granola bar, fruit snack, crackers, water bottle, hand wipes, chapstick, dental floss, hand written note, book)
- Offer to babysit for FREE especially for a single mom
- Volunteer to read at a local school
- Sign up to serve a meal at a homeless shelter
- Invite someone with nowhere to go over for a Holiday
“Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.” Matthew 25:34-40
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’
37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’
40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’
I found this picture and thought it was very fitting. The photographer said “When looking to get a haircut in Wilmore Kentucky I was surprised by the barber shop owners honesty!”
